Before entering, take a minute to confirm all six:
- You recognize the sponsor or can verify who is running the promotion.
- The official rules are available and match the entry page.
- Your age and location meet the eligibility requirements.
- You understand the entry limit and closing time.
- You found the free entry method, when the promotion offers or requires one.
- The form asks only for information that makes sense for entering or delivering the prize.
If any important detail is missing or contradictory, pause. A prize is not worth guessing about the rules or giving sensitive information to an unknown party.
1. Find and read the official rules
Look for a link labelled Official Rules, Terms and Conditions, Contest Rules, or Promotion Rules. It may appear beneath the entry form or in the website footer.
The rules should identify the sponsor or administrator and explain the promotion’s:
- start and end dates, including the time zone;
- eligible countries, states, provinces, territories, or local areas;
- minimum age and any other restrictions;
- permitted entry methods and entry limits;
- prize description and approximate value;
- winner-selection and notification process;
- response deadline and any documents a potential winner must provide; and
- privacy or publicity terms.
When a short advertisement, social post, or Contest Reminder listing conflicts with the official rules, follow the rules. Save the rules or take a screenshot if the prize is valuable or the claim process has several steps.

2. Confirm that you are eligible
Eligibility is more specific than “open to the United States,” “open to Canada,” or “worldwide.” A promotion may exclude particular states, provinces, territories, countries, age groups, employees, household members, or people outside a sponsor’s service area.
Check:
- Location: Is your country and state, province, or territory included?
- Age: Do you meet the stated minimum age on the date the rules require?
- Relationship to the sponsor: Are employees, contractors, agencies, or their household members excluded?
- Accounts or memberships: Does entry require a valid loyalty account, social account, email address, or other membership?
- Prize restrictions: Can the sponsor legally and practically deliver the prize to you?
Do not assume that seeing a promotion online makes you eligible. If the wording is unclear, use the sponsor’s official contact method before entering.
3. Follow the entry limit exactly
More entries are not always allowed. Common limits include:
- one entry per person;
- one entry per household;
- one entry per email address or social account;
- one entry per day, week, or entry period; or
- a fixed total across all entry methods.
Watch for whether “daily” means one entry per calendar day in a named time zone or one entry every 24 hours. If a promotion offers several entry methods, check whether each method provides additional entries or whether all methods share one overall limit.
Submitting extra forms, using alternate identities, or ignoring household and account limits can make entries invalid. The safest approach is simple: enter only as often as the official rules permit.

4. Understand “no purchase necessary” and free entry methods
In U.S. chance-based sweepstakes, the Federal Trade Commission says real sweepstakes are free and by chance, and a promoter cannot require payment to enter or improve your chance of winning. The FTC also notes that rules vary for skill contests. In Canada, the Competition Bureau tells promoters to disclose whether a purchase is necessary and explains that other federal, provincial, and local laws may also apply.
You may see a free route called an alternate method of entry, or AMOE. It might use an online form, email, or postal mail instead of a purchase-related code. Read every instruction: the free route may have its own deadline, required wording, mailing address, or limit.
Remember:
- “No purchase necessary” does not mean “no conditions.” You still must follow the stated method and eligibility rules.
- Buying something should not be treated as a shortcut around the rules.
- Do not confuse a random sweepstakes with a judged skill contest, fundraiser, raffle, or lottery; different rules can apply.
- When you are unsure what kind of promotion you are viewing, pause and read the sponsor’s definitions and winner-selection section.

5. Protect your personal information
An entry form may reasonably ask for your name, email address, age confirmation, and location. A sponsor may later need a shipping address or eligibility documents from a potential winner. That does not mean every request is safe.
Before submitting:
- confirm that the web address belongs to the sponsor or named administrator;
- open the privacy policy and check how your information may be used or shared;
- avoid reusing an important password on a contest account;
- leave optional marketing boxes unchecked if you do not want those messages; and
- do not provide bank, credit-card, or government identification numbers merely to enter.
The FTC warns that contest promoters may use or sell entry information for advertising. Decide whether the entry is worth the data and marketing permissions requested.
6. Recognize sweepstakes and prize scams
A convincing logo or familiar brand name is not proof that a message is genuine. Scammers impersonate real organizations and create urgency so people act before checking.
Stop and verify independently if someone:
- says you won a promotion you do not remember entering;
- asks you to pay a fee, tax, shipping charge, customs charge, or deposit to receive a prize;
- requests bank or credit-card information to “release” winnings;
- demands payment by gift card, cryptocurrency, wire transfer, cash, or payment app;
- sends a check and asks you to return part of the money;
- pressures you to respond immediately or keep the prize secret;
- contacts you from an unrelated email address, account, or domain; or
- sends a link or attachment that you were not expecting.
The FTC’s guidance is direct: a request to pay to claim a prize is a scam signal. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service likewise warns against paying fees to receive sweepstakes winnings. Canada’s Competition Bureau advises that you cannot be a legitimate random winner if neither you nor someone acting for you entered.
Do not verify a suspicious message through the phone number or link it provides. Find the sponsor’s official website yourself and use the contact information published there.
If you believe you encountered fraud:
- United States: report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If U.S. Mail was involved, also use the U.S. Postal Inspection Service reporting guidance.
- Canada: review the Competition Bureau’s lottery, sweepstakes, and contest scam guidance and follow its reporting links.
- If you shared sensitive information or sent money, contact the relevant financial institution or identity-protection service promptly.

A simple routine for first-time entrants
- Choose a promotion. Start with a prize you actually want and a sponsor you can identify.
- Open the official rules. Confirm eligibility, deadline, entry method, frequency, and prize terms.
- Inspect the form and URL. Make sure the requested information and web address make sense.
- Submit one valid entry. Follow the instructions exactly and save any confirmation.
- Track repeat entries. If the rules allow daily or periodic entries, record when you may return.
- Verify winner messages independently. Never pay to unlock a prize.
