Find Promotions Open to Utah Residents
Start with this Utah page, then compare the broader United States sweepstakes listings for national promotions. Read the complete eligibility section even when Utah appears in a state list. A sponsor may also limit entry by ZIP code, retail market, shipping area, employment, household relationship, or the ability to attend an event or collect a prize.
Residents near state lines may also find the Colorado contest listings and Arizona contest listings useful when a promotion serves a regional business area or requires local pickup. Living near, shopping in, or traveling to another state does not make you a resident there; use the definition in the official rules.
“Sweepstakes” is the clearest term for many chance-based promotions, while sponsors also use “contest,” “giveaway,” and “promotion.” The Federal Trade Commission’s sweepstakes guidance distinguishes free, chance-based sweepstakes from skill contests. Check how the winner is selected instead of relying on the promotion’s label.
Before You Enter
- Confirm that your Utah residence is included and note when the sponsor measures residency.
- Read the age requirement. Utah’s age of majority provides useful context, but a sponsor can set a different lawful minimum for its promotion or prize.
- Use the official entry method and follow any free-entry instructions exactly.
- Record limits per person, household, email address, social account, or entry period. Extra entries can cause disqualification.
- Convert the deadline from the time zone stated in the rules. Do not assume the sponsor uses your local time.
- Review pickup, shipping, travel dates, guest requirements, releases, taxes, and expenses the prize does not cover.
- Save the rules and entry confirmation so you can compare a later winner notice with the original promotion.
Understand Utah Prize Notices
Utah has a Prize Notices Regulation Act in Utah Code Title 13, Chapter 28. It covers a defined kind of notice sent to someone in Utah that says the person was selected or may be eligible for a prize and conditions receipt on a payment or donation, or invites contact to learn how to receive the prize. The law requires specified disclosures, including the solicitor and sponsor, verifiable retail value, applicable odds, sales-presentation requirements, charges, restrictions, and eligibility limits.
That statutory “prize notice” is not the same as every genuine message from a sweepstakes sponsor. The Act’s definition excludes a notice resulting from the recipient’s actual prior entry when the promised prize is awarded. Use the law as context for evaluating a solicitation, then verify the sender and the original official rules. This page offers general information, not legal advice.
Check Taxes and Scam Warning Signs
IRS Publication 525 on prizes and awards says cash prizes and the fair market value of prizes received as goods or services generally must be included in income. Utah’s current TC-40 instructions begin the state return with federal adjusted gross income and then apply Utah additions, subtractions, exemptions, and credits. Do not assume a noncash prize has no federal or Utah tax effect. Keep the award notice, valuation, and tax forms, and seek qualified advice for a substantial prize.
The Utah Division of Consumer Protection’s sweepstakes and lottery warning says an up-front demand for money to collect winnings is a major scam signal. Be especially cautious of requests for gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps, or returning part of a deposited check. Find the sponsor’s contact information independently rather than using a link or phone number in an unexpected message.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Old Must I Be to Enter a Utah Sweepstakes?
There is no single age limit for every promotion. Utah Code Section 15-2-1 says the period of minority generally extends to age 18, but the sponsor’s rules may require entrants to be older or impose prize-specific restrictions. Check the age at entry, the age when the winner is chosen, and whether proof is required.
Must I Buy Something to Enter a Utah Sweepstakes?
For a real chance-based sweepstakes, no. The FTC says sweepstakes are free and by chance, and a promoter cannot require payment or a purchase to enter or improve your odds. A judged skill contest is different, so read the winner-selection and entry-fee terms carefully.
What Does Utah Require in a Prize Notice?
For notices covered by Utah’s specific statutory definition, the Prize Notices Regulation Act requires information such as the solicitor and sponsor, prize value, applicable odds, required sales presentations, charges, restrictions, and eligibility limits. The Act has definitions and exceptions, so do not assume every email from a promotion falls within it. Compare any notice with the rules for a promotion you remember entering.
Are Sweepstakes Prizes Taxable in Utah?
They can be. IRS Publication 525 generally includes cash prizes and the fair market value of goods or services in income. Utah’s TC-40 instructions use federal adjusted gross income as their starting point before state adjustments. The result depends on your circumstances and the tax year, so keep the sponsor’s valuation and ask a qualified tax professional when needed.
Can a Real Sponsor Ask Me for a W-9?
Sometimes, after you have independently verified the win. For example, the Utah Office of Tourism’s official rules for an August 2026 giveaway required a verified winner to complete a Form W-9 before receiving the prize. That ended promotion is only an example of sponsor-specific paperwork. A form request does not make an unexpected message genuine: verify the promotion, sender, and secure submission method before sharing tax information, and never pay money to release a prize.
Where Can I Report a Suspicious Prize Message in Utah?
Start with the Utah Division of Consumer Protection’s online complaint intake, which routes reports based on what happened and the parties’ locations. The intake also directs some reports to the FTC, FBI, Postal Inspection Service, or another state’s agency. Preserve the message, envelope, payment instructions, receipts, and the contact details the sender used.
Keep Your Entries Manageable
Use Contest Reminder to organize promising entries and repeat-entry dates. Focus on prizes you can use, keep the sponsor’s rules with your records, and verify eligibility again before accepting a win. Contest Reminder helps with discovery and tracking; the sponsor remains responsible for interpreting its rules and fulfilling the prize.
