Ohio Contests, Sweepstakes and Giveaways
Find contests, sweepstakes and giveaways that may be open to Ohio residents. Contest Reminder helps you discover and track third-party promotions, but each sponsor’s official rules decide who can enter, how winners are chosen and what a winner must do to claim a prize.
In Ohio and across the United States, sweepstakes, giveaway, contest and promotion are the terms residents are most likely to see. In rules written for a broader audience, you may also see prize draw, competition or instant win game. The label matters less than the official rules: read the eligibility, entry method, deadline, prize and winner-selection sections before entering.
Finding contests open to Ohio residents
A promotion shown on an Ohio page is not automatically open to every Ohio resident. Check the rules for wording such as:
- Open to legal residents of Ohio
- Open to legal residents of the United States or the 50 United States and D.C.
- Open to residents of specified states, including Ohio
- Void where prohibited, restricted or taxed by law
- Excludes residents of certain states
National promotions may also appear on the United States contests page. Ohio residents who live near state borders may want to compare rules for nearby Michigan contests, Pennsylvania contests or Indiana contests, especially for retail, radio, event or local pickup prizes. Enter only when the rules include your place of residence.
Before entering an Ohio contest
- Confirm residency: Look for Ohio, the United States, or a state list that includes Ohio.
- Check the age rule: Ohio’s general age of majority is 18, but a sponsor can set a higher minimum age for a promotion.
- Read the entry method: Confirm whether the promotion is a random sweepstakes, judged contest, instant win game, skill contest or another format.
- Look for a no-purchase option: Real sweepstakes should not require a purchase or payment to enter or improve your odds.
- Check entry limits: Some promotions allow one entry total; others allow daily, weekly, referral or bonus entries.
- Check the deadline and time zone: Ohio uses Eastern Time, but national sponsors may close entries using Eastern, Central, Pacific or another stated time zone.
- Review prize costs: Travel prizes, event tickets and large merchandise prizes may leave winners responsible for taxes, transportation, lodging, meals, insurance, tips or other costs.
- Watch for scam signs: Be cautious of unexpected win notices, requests for bank details, pressure to act quickly or demands for fees before receiving a prize.
Ohio age and sweepstakes considerations
Ohio law says people who are 18 or older are of full age for all purposes if they are not under a legal disability. That does not mean every contest must accept 18-year-old entrants. Alcohol, tobacco, gambling, travel, financial, vehicle and other regulated prizes often have higher age requirements, and some sponsors restrict entry to adults who can sign affidavits, releases or tax forms.
Ohio’s gambling chapter defines a scheme of chance as involving valuable consideration for a chance to win a prize, and Ohio’s gambling statute restricts operating games or schemes of chance outside permitted exceptions. For ordinary consumer promotions, the practical takeaway for entrants is simple: be skeptical of any promotion that asks Ohio residents to pay for a chance to win, and read the official rules carefully.
No-purchase entries and official rules
The Federal Trade Commission’s prize-scam guidance says real sweepstakes are free and by chance, and that asking someone to pay to enter or to improve the odds of winning is illegal. A sponsor may still ask you to complete a free form, mail an entry, upload content, answer a question or follow another rule-based process. If a purchase path and a free alternate entry path both exist, compare the deadlines and instructions so your entry is valid.
Skill contests can work differently because winners may be judged on a submission, answer, score or other performance. If a promotion charges a fee for a skill contest, review the sponsor, judging criteria, refund policy and prize terms before deciding whether it is worth entering.
Prize taxes and records
Prizes can create tax obligations. The IRS says prizes and awards are addressed in Publication 525, and its gambling-income topic says gambling winnings are taxable and include cash plus the fair market value of prizes such as cars and trips. For Ohio residents, a valuable prize may affect federal, state or local tax filings depending on the prize and the winner’s situation.
Keep the official rules, winner notification, tax forms, receipts and notes about prize value and any expenses. Contest Reminder cannot provide tax advice; contact the IRS, the Ohio Department of Taxation or a qualified tax professional when a prize is significant or unclear.
Recognizing and reporting prize scams
The FTC warns that a supposed prize is a scam if you have to pay money, pay to improve your odds or provide financial information to claim it. Its fake prize, sweepstakes and lottery scam guidance also warns about pressure tactics, fake checks, impersonation of recognizable companies and payment requests by wire transfer, payment app, gift card or cryptocurrency.
Ohio residents can file a consumer complaint with the Ohio Attorney General. The FTC also asks people to report prize and lottery scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If someone used your personal information, follow the FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov steps; if money was taken, contact your bank or payment provider quickly and consider making a police report.

Frequently asked questions
Can Ohio residents enter U.S.-wide sweepstakes?
Usually, if the rules say the promotion is open to legal residents of the United States and do not exclude Ohio. Check state exclusions, age limits and prize-delivery restrictions before entering.
How old do I have to be to enter an Ohio contest?
Ohio’s general age of majority is 18, but contest age requirements vary. Follow the sponsor’s stated minimum age, and expect higher limits for regulated prizes such as alcohol, gambling, tobacco, vehicles or travel.
Do Ohio sweepstakes need a no-purchase entry method?
Legitimate sweepstakes should not require payment to enter or improve your chance of winning. If the rules mention a purchase, look for a free alternate method of entry and follow it exactly.
Are skill-testing questions required for Ohio residents?
They are not a standard U.S. sweepstakes requirement the way they are often seen in Canadian promotions. If a sponsor includes a question, judged entry or other skill component, the official rules should explain when and how it applies.
Will I owe taxes on an Ohio contest prize?
Possibly. The IRS treats many prizes, awards and gambling winnings as taxable income, and valuable prizes may also affect Ohio or local filings. Keep records and get tax advice for significant prizes.
Can I enter contests in Michigan, Pennsylvania or Indiana if I live in Ohio?
Only if the rules include Ohio residents or otherwise allow your residency. Border-area promotions sometimes require local pickup, event attendance or residency in a specific state or market.
How can I tell whether a prize notice sent to an Ohio resident is a scam?
Warning signs include a notice for a contest you did not enter, demands for upfront fees or taxes, requests for banking or Social Security information, fake checks and pressure to respond immediately.
Where can Ohio residents report suspicious sweepstakes or prize notices?
Report suspected scams to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and file a consumer complaint with the Ohio Attorney General when appropriate. If money was taken or personal information was misused, contact your bank, payment provider and local law enforcement.
