The same law says no person under 18 may claim a sweepstakes prize worth more than $1,000 without a parent or guardian’s consent. That provision does not make every promotion open to everyone under 18; the sponsor may set a higher minimum age, and its official rules still determine who may enter.

The law also states that the value of a cash or merchandise sweepstakes prize is income for New Jersey income-tax purposes. Federally, the IRS includes prizes and awards among potentially taxable income, including income paid in property, goods, or services. Do not assume a noncash prize is tax-free.
